Beauty By The Book

Beauty By The Book

It’s so easy to forget that we were fearfully and wonderfully made in God’s image and He wants to see true beauty in our hearts, not just in our fleeting external appearances.

I believe that women should be beautiful—God designed us to be that way. Our skin, hair and other features were created to be soft and appealing, and our body was fashioned to be attractive and beautiful to men. Women were designed to be attractive; I love to look really good- I like my makeup, shoes, clothes and jewelries to be just on point. I love to enter a room and hear people give me compliments while I smile nicely at them and say thank you. Sometimes when I think about it, I don’t think my husband would have found me attractive at first sight if I did not look so beautiful. However, the physical side of beauty is just a small part of what makes me truly beautiful.

A truly beautiful woman is physically appealing, but fortunately, this is not the only prerequisite for beauty. The Book puts it this way:

(They) will be captivated by your life of holy beauty. What matters is not your outer appearance—the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes—but your inner disposition. Cultivate inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind that God delights in. The holy women of old were beautiful before God that way, and were good, loyal wives to their husbands.  1 Peter 3:3-4 (The Message)

The Bible is not saying that the outer appearance doesn’t matter. It is saying: What matters is not you outer appearance. In other words, don’t let your physical beauty define you. Don’t let it cause you undue stress. Don’t make it your most important priority. Don’t let it replace the more important parts of your life.

A beautiful woman is not only admired for her physical appearance; she is admired for inner qualities as well. There are many inner qualities that make a woman truly beautiful and below are three of them from the Book that strikes me-

Kindness-  a truly beautiful woman is gracious. Proverbs 11:16 tells us that a gracious woman retains honor. When you think of the women that you hold in high regard, they usually are ladies who are kind, gentle, thoughtful, unselfish, etc. They are the women that we look up to and remember. Women who are gracious and kind are attractive.

Good judgment- in Proverbs11:22 we see that a beautiful woman who lacks discretion is compared to a ring of gold in a swine’s snout. If a woman is physically attractive, but lacks discretion, it takes away from her beauty and value. Good judgment is needed in many areas of life such as moral issues, money matters, choices, decisions, dealing with others, work, etc. A woman who possesses good judgment is of great value because she can be trusted to do the right thing.

Continuous improvement- Proverbs 31 describes a woman who is competent and capable of doing many different things. A woman who continues to grow while developing her talents and abilities is a woman of value. She is one who is able to contribute to others through these abilities, and she will be of use to her family, Church, community, etc. A woman who is developing her potential is an attractive woman.

Beyond it all, a truly beautiful woman is not only attractive on the outside and inside; she is also attractive to God. How a woman looks to God is more important than any other quality she possesses because her outer beauty will fade and her inner beauty will cease, but the beauty that God sees in her will be important when she stands before Him. A woman who is beautiful to God is a woman who puts God first in her life and strives to do what He has commanded. She continually deepens her relationship with Him and grows spiritually.

By the Book, a wholly beautiful woman is one who is beautiful on the outside, beautiful on the inside and best of all, beautiful to God.
